What the planner surfaces
- The longest and least-flexible oven work anchors the schedule first.
- Shared rack space is checked only during the minutes dishes truly overlap.
- Stovetop and counter work are staged against the active-cook and burner limits instead of being invisible.
- If the roast runs 20 minutes late, the planner reflows the other dishes or moves service later instead of shortening a recipe.
Why that helps: The output is a constraint-aware kitchen queue, not a generic backward timer that assumes the oven, burners, and host can all do everything at once.
WHY THIS IS DIFFERENT
Most cooking timelines hide the second bottleneck: the cook.
A simple backward timeline can tell every dish to finish at 5:45. A real kitchen cannot obey that if four pans need one oven at three temperatures while gravy, assembly, and garnish all need the same pair of hands. This planner treats oven space, burners, and active-cook attention as separate limited resources.
The extra fields are intentional. A roast may need a real rest after it leaves the oven. A casserole may be able to finish 30 minutes early. Two recipes may share oven time only if the oven can physically hold both and the instructions allow a compatible setting. Stovetop and counter jobs are staged into hands-on lanes so they do not silently overlap.
HOW TO GET A USEFUL PLAN
Use your recipes, then make the schedule honest.
Start with the real serve time.
Set the time you want food ready, then keep a small finish buffer so carving, plating, and a late dish do not consume the exact minute everyone sits down.
Copy timing from each recipe.
Enter actual oven time and temperature. Add a genuine rest period when the recipe calls for one. Do not shorten a roast or casserole just to make the blocks fit.
Be conservative about flexibility.
Leave the temperature at “exact” unless the instructions you are following really allow a range. When you permit ±25°F, the planner can choose one compatible setting for that dish's oven run; it will not oscillate the temperature while the dish is cooking.
Fix the red conflicts.
If a dish cannot fit, the useful answer is not a fake schedule. Move that dish earlier, make it ahead, change the menu, use another appliance, or confirm a wider safe hold/temperature range from the recipe.
FOOD-SAFETY GUARDRAIL
The planner never decides whether food is safely cooked.
USDA guidance says hot food being held for service should stay at 140°F or warmer, cold food at 40°F or colder, and perishable food generally should not remain at room temperature for more than two hours. USDA also lists 165°F for poultry and leftovers, with other foods having their own safe minimum internal temperatures.
Those are safety rules, not scheduling shortcuts. Use a food thermometer where appropriate, and follow the recipe or authoritative guidance for the exact food you are making.

How does the planner decide what goes first?
It starts with the most constrained dishes—especially those with very little early-finish flexibility—then uses deadlines, temperature rigidity, and oven time to break ties. Within the limits you enter, it tries to place each dish as late as possible so food is not finishing unnecessarily early.
Can two dishes be in the oven together?
Yes, if the oven has enough usable rack slots at that exact time and the entered temperature ranges can share one setting. Rack capacity is checked by time segment, so two dishes that overlap a long dish at different times are not incorrectly counted as simultaneous.
Why is there a temperature-change buffer?
Because switching an oven from one setting to another is not instantaneous in a real kitchen. The buffer reserves handoff time between oven runs when a shared setting is not possible.
How are stovetop and counter tasks scheduled?
They are staged backward from the same target-ready time. Stovetop tasks consume one burner and one active-cook lane; counter and cold-finish tasks consume an active-cook lane. This is workload planning, not a claim that every recipe can be safely held until service.
What happens if one scheduled dish starts running late?
Use the late-dish box after the base schedule exists. The tool locks that dish to its original start, extends the oven occupancy by the delay you enter, and re-schedules the other dishes around it. If the original serving buffer is consumed, the planner recommends a later serve time rather than shortening another dish.
What if a dish stays in the red conflict box?
That means there is no slot inside the time, rack, temperature, rest, hold, and transition limits you entered. Treat that as a menu-planning signal: verify the recipe, move work earlier, use another suitable appliance, or simplify the menu rather than relying on impossible oven math.
