The useful starting range is a benchmark, not a promise

Current party calculators commonly start around one to two pounds of ice per guest, but that range is only a shopping benchmark. It becomes misleading when it silently assumes what the ice is doing. Twenty guests drinking from chilled cans indoors may use far less than twenty guests outdoors with two open coolers, mixed drinks, and a cold seafood tray. Treat the benchmark as a reasonableness check after you build the plan, not as the plan itself.

If you want a fast first pass, multiply the guest count by a one-to-two-pound range and then compare that result with the job-based estimate below. A result near the low end makes more sense when drinks begin refrigerator-cold and most ice goes into glasses. Job 1: estimate the ice that will actually go into drinks
